Cynophère

Cynophère from 1875

The Cynophère was a three-wheeled vehicle made by the French inventor M. Huret in 1875. The tricycle , patented on December 14, 1875 , was moved by dogs , who set the tricycle on two wheels on the side of the large rear wheels; The vehicle was controlled with a handlebar attached to the front wheel. The vehicle, as Setright notes, was "of a dubious nature, ever meant to be taken seriously by society."

An "ingeniously absurd" horse tricycle from 1906 provided for the horses' hooves to be clamped in a pedal device and thus to drive the rear wheels.
