Cynthia Mathez (born October 10, 1985 ) is a Swiss badminton player . She has multiple sclerosis and starts in Parabadminton in wheelchair class WH1. Häsler is part of the Swiss national parabadminton team and won gold at the European Badminton Championships for the disabled in Rodez in 2018 with her doubles partner Karin Suter-Erath . She is preparing to take part in the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.

Athletic career

Sonja Häsler was initially active as a judoka , rugby player and car racing driver. In 2009 she contracted multiple sclerosis and since 2015 she has been dependent on a wheelchair . She initially wanted to run wheelchair rugby , but her doctors expressed concerns. She then turned to parabadminton .

Mathez first took part in a Badminton World Cup for the disabled in Ulsan in 2017 and reached the quarter-finals in doubles with Karin Suter-Erath. In mixed she was eliminated with Christian Hamböck in the group stage. In 2018 she was successful at the European Championships in Rodez and won gold in doubles with Karin Suter-Erath , in singles she was eliminated in the quarterfinals. At the World Cup in Basel, she was eliminated in the group stage in doubles and mixed. Mathez aims to participate in the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo .
