Cyril Stiles (1932)

Cyril Alec "Bob" Stiles (born October 10, 1904 in Pietermaritzburg , Natal , † March 5, 1985 ) was a New Zealand rower .

Stiles rowed first with his brother Glen, then later at the Avon Rowing Club in Christchurch with Frederick Thompson . At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , Stiles and Thompson competed in two boat classes. In the two without a helmsman , the two New Zealanders took second place in the lead, three seconds behind the Britons Lewis Clive and Hugh Edwards . In the repechage they qualified for the final with a second place behind the Dutch. In the final, their third race, the two New Zealanders took second place, as in the run-up, the two Brits were the first to cross the finish line. The silver medal was the second Olympic rowing medal for New Zealand after the bronze medal in the 1920's for Clarence Hadfield D'Arcy . It was not until 1968 that New Zealand rowers won an Olympic medal again.

Stiles and Thompson also competed with the New Zealand eighth in 1932 , but were eliminated in the repechage. In 1938, the two won a bronze medal at the British Empire Games in Sydney with eighth .

Before World War II , Stiles built caravans and later designed and built row boats.
