Frederick "Fred" Haughton Thompson (born March 31, 1908 in Christchurch , † December 15, 1971 ibid) was a New Zealand rower .

Thompson rowed for the Avon Rowing Club in Christchurch. At the British Empire Games in 1930 he won the silver medal with the New Zealand eighth , eight years later he won the bronze medal with the eighth at the British Empire Games in 1938 .

At the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932 , Thompson retired with eighth in the repechage. Together with Cyril Stiles , Thompson also competed in Los Angeles in a double without a helmsman . In the preliminary run, the two New Zealanders took second place, three seconds behind the Britons Lewis Clive and Hugh Edwards . In the repechage they qualified for the final with a second place behind the Dutch. In the final, their third race, the two New Zealanders took second place, as in the run-up, the two Brits were the first to cross the finish line. The silver medal was the second Olympic rowing medal for New Zealand after the bronze medal in the 1920's for Clarence Hadfield D'Arcy . It was not until 1968 that New Zealand rowers won an Olympic medal again.

Thompson first worked in a tannery. After losing an arm in an accident at work, he worked as a greengrocer. He was also active as a coach in his home club.
