Czesław Jacek Centkiewicz (born October 18, 1904 in Warsaw ; † July 10, 1996 there ) was a Polish author and adventurer.

Life

He was the son of Stanisław Centkiewicz and Stanisława, née Bresteczer. In 1924 he graduated from Sankt-Kazimierz-Gymnasium and began studying at the University of Liège . Until the Second World War he worked at the State Meteorological Institute in Warsaw. There he prepared the first Polish expedition to Bear Island in 1932. Shortly afterwards he published his first works, including a report on rescuing the Cheliuskin crew .

During the Second World War he stayed in Warsaw and after the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 he was arrested and deported to Neuengamme concentration camp . After the war he became director of a power plant in Lower Silesia and at the State Meteorological Institute. In 1950 he returned to Warsaw to advance the exploration of the polar region. He died on July 10, 1996 and was buried in the Wólka Węglowa Cemetery in Warsaw. The Centkiewicz Hills in Antarctica have been named after him since 1985 .

Many of his books were aimed at younger readers and he received the Order of Smiles for them in 1970 . He wrote some of his books with his wife Alina Centkiewicz .
