The Teufelsturm was built as one of the former twelve towers as part of the Menden city fortifications from 1271 to 1344 and, along with the Poenige tower, is the last remaining defense tower of the former Menden city fortifications. For a long time the tower served as a dungeon for the prisoners of the electoral jurisdiction. The building was named Duivelsturm at the time of the witch hunt , when primarily women and men accused of witchcraft were imprisoned here. Around 1700 a half-timbered house was added to the tower.

The Menden Carnival Society Kornblumenblau (MKG) took over the tower, which was half-ruined at the time, in 1978 and restored it until 1981. Since then, the building has housed the exhibition of the Westphalian Carnival Museum , which documents the history of the Westphalian Carnival over the past 300 years. In 1986 the tower was declared a monument.
