Date, place, number of visitors

The Schöppenmarkt takes place every Ash Wednesday after Carnival from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the city center of the formerly independent town of Dülken - today a district of Viersen . Depending on the weather, between 100,000 and around 120,000 visitors came from the Rhineland and the Ruhr area , but also from the neighboring Netherlands in recent years .

History, size and today's offer

This all-day market, a meeting place for the “flying traders”, has been held on Ash Wednesday since 1847. It bears the name Schöppenmarkt because farmers from the area used to buy hand tools and agricultural equipment here , including "Schöppen" ( shovels ). Today dealers from all over Germany, partly also from Belgium and the Netherlands, offer a variety of goods on a sales front approximately four kilometers long, including, for example, kitchen utensils, spices, fan articles, textiles, garden gnomes, horse meat , car window wipers, terracotta Fruit and eel. There are also drinks stalls and food stalls that traditionally offer their fish specialties. Also Barker sell their wares. The number of exhibitors who apply for the Schöppenmarkt is much higher than that of the approximately 410 stands. Due to the high number of visitors, part of the Dülken city center must be closed to car traffic on Ash Wednesday.
