The Düsseldorfer Turnverein von 1847 eV is a German gymnastics and sports club in Düsseldorf . Today it is based on Staufenplatz in the Grafenberg district . As a popular sports club, it is divided into twelve departments and has around 1,400 members.

history

The club, whose origin goes back to the gymnastics and national movement of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn , is the oldest gymnastics club in town. On the initiative of the grammar school teacher Friedrich Kohlrausch , a gymnasium was opened in Düsseldorf on May 15, 1815. On April 1, 1847, a loose association of gymnastics friends formed the "gymnastics club for adults". Initially, the association, which was headed in 1848, 1850 and 1851 by the founding member, publicist and businessman Moritz Geisenheimer (1818–1878), had 40 members. On August 6, 1848, the gymnastics club took part in the festival of German unity in Düsseldorf, a "fanal" ofdemocratic movement in Germany . On June 20, 1849, the police dissolved the association after they searched the apartments of gymnasts, including Geisenheimer's apartment, and confiscated association files. Then artists performed the gymnastics club, which was founded in 1848 Künstlerverein paint box in what was the police reason to observe the artists association. On May 15, 1859 the association was re-established. On the so-called Golzheimer Insel , north of Düsseldorf's old town, he had a practice area where football was played as early as 1895 . On October 23, 1898 the club was one of the founders of the Rheinischer Spiel-Verband . With Georg Sich, the club produced a gymnast for the German national team. The youth gymnastics club became German champions in 1967. The women played in the second national basketball league.
