Six class 798 railcars were converted to the 740 class in the Kassel repair shop . The converted vehicles 798 827, 705, 574, 735, 693 and 681 were given the numbers 740 001 to 740 006 in this order.
The 740 series has a diesel engine which is housed in a soundproof room. Inside there is also a lounge and a large workshop room. In order to enable the unloading of bulky parts, a flap was let into the car body sides. The windows above these flaps have been removed, other windows have only been highlighted in white.
