The German Umbrella Association of Historical Fencers e. V. ( DDHF ) is an association with the aim of cultivating and disseminating the historical European martial arts . It serves as the joint representative of its national members, at the international level in the International Federation for Historical European Martial Arts (IFHEMA).

The DDHF was founded in Melsungen in 2014 and is based in Kassel.

Structure of the association

In 2019, the DDHF consists of 51 member groups (schools, associations or interest groups) with around 1982 individuals.

The DDHF is managed by an eight-person presidium. The highest organ of the association is the annual general meeting.

Sport and research

The DDHF is the only sports association in Germany that has explicitly included the promotion of research as a second equal purpose in its statutes. The reason for this is that the disciplines of historical fencing are martial arts that have fallen into oblivion and that have to be reconstructed using traditional fencing books and manuscripts. The association hopes that funding for historical and linguistic research on historical fencing will lead to better results in the interpretation of ancient sources.

Tasks and goals of the association

The purpose of the DDHF is to maintain and promote historical fencing. Historical fencing is defined as follows:

“Historical fencing deals with the reconstruction of European martial arts close to sources, whose tradition was interrupted or weakened and for which there is a scientifically usable source situation. This includes in particular arts whose sources were published before 1918. ”

The tasks of the association include among other things

  • the spread of historical fencing as a sport and cultural asset in theory and practice;
  • the development and promotion of concepts for the further development of historical fencing;
  • the regular training and further education of trainees, trainers, trainers, referees and functionaries and the development of training standards;
  • the representation of historical fencing in the common interest of the members;
  • promoting a positive public perception of historical fencing;
  • the promotion of a regulated sports business;
  • the involvement and participation in national and international sporting activities and the organization of corresponding sporting events.
