The Direction générale de service de sécurité des institutions de l'État ( DGSSIE ) is a unit of the Chad Armed Forces . Sometimes the unit is also referred to as the Presidential Guard. The unit was formed in 2005 when the Republican Guard was disbanded because of mass deserters . The unit is an elite unit within the military , is better armed and pays its soldiers higher wages . Initially, it is said to have had 1640 soldiers. It now employs 14,000 men in 2019.

In 2008, Général de division Dirmi Haroun was commander of the DGSSIE. His deputy at the time was Général de Brigade Toufa Abdoulaye. In 2012, the guard was then headed by Géneral Saleh Touma . In April 2014 Mahamat Idriss Déby was appointed commander of the DGSSIE and is still in office in 2019.
