The DIN standard DIN 1421 regulates the structure of documents such as abstracts and literature reports . It defines the basic terms text , section, paragraph and list . These are then individually defined and the shape of the individual parts of a text determined.

This structure is then reflected in the individual headings and the table of contents .

Furthermore, references and alignment lines are specified.

A structure according to DIN 1421 is often required for the design of scientific and technical texts.
