DJ sneak

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DJ Sneak (* 1970 in Puerto Rico , actually Carlos Sosa ) is a Puerto Rican house DJ and producer . He has been active worldwide for over 15 years and with over 600 publications he has shaped the scene like no other. Despite his success or influence on the genre, he never tried to become a star, like one of his former colleagues Armand Van Helden . Rather, he tries to this day to use his fame to spread his now forgotten style of house.

Life

Sosa moved with his family from the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico to Chicago in 1983 at the age of 13 . At that time, the roots of the house genre emerged in the metropolis , which gave Carlos lasting inspiration. After working as a graffiti artist for a long time, he came into contact with music through a job as a DJ. In the following years he worked at the legendary DJ record store Gramaphone Records , where he honed his DJ skills and met other well-known DJs. At the same time he started to deal with producing and founded his first label Defiant Records. In 1992 he started recording tracks with a new style that became his trademark from then on. In 1994, Carlos met Cajmere , who made him famous in the scene. Since then, DJ Sneak has been a synonym for a special disco-filtered house, which in the following years also influenced the work of greats such as Daft Punk , Armand Van Helden and Basement Jaxx . In 1997 he released the track "You Can't Hide From Your Bud", which is probably his most famous work to this day and became one of the club's anthems of the year. After 2001, when the European house sound gained importance, the international scene became a little quieter about himself. It can now be attributed more to the American scene or its underground, but still plays internationally, albeit less often. 2008 can be seen as a kind of comeback for the artist. He tries with a large number of productions (so far over 20) on numerous labels and very many appearances at festivals and clubs to get people's awareness again. After a two-year hiatus due to the poor sales figures in the USA, he can now release four EPs with new tracks through a German distributor on his last active label, Magnetic .

Although he was heavily influenced by the conditions in Chicago, Carlos moved to Toronto ( Canada ) in 1997 , where he still lives today. For him, the city and its house scene have a lot in common with his previous homeland, but without gang crime and violence.

Productions

DJ Sneak is one of the most active producers in the electronic field. With hundreds of tracks (his own and remixes for other artists) and numerous mix CDs and compilations, his discography is hardly manageable. It is not uncommon for him to spend twelve hours in his own studio, trying to turn his thoughts into notes on the go and later into music in the studio. For his ongoing productivity he was even nicknamed "Sneak A Weak" by his fellow scene mates for fun for a while and therefore began to publish his music under other pseudonyms . However, these tracks do not differ from his previous work and, as he says, can be easily identified by the typical sneak sound. Currently only tracks appear under the real artist name in order to increase his awareness.
