German explosive hand grenade DM21

The explosive hand grenade DM21 was a hand grenade used in the German Bundeswehr , where DM stands for German model . It is a replica of the American MK 3 A 2 and was introduced in the late 1950s. The license production took place at the Norwegian company Raufoss ANA ( LOS RA). It was not delivered ready to be thrown, but separated from the detonator. Before the throw, the detonator DM42 series had to be screwed in. The hand grenade has a delay of 4.5 ± 0.5 seconds and works through the effect of an explosion. With the introduction of the new standard DM51 hand grenade in 1974/75, the DM21 was replaced and only played a subordinate role.

Layout and function

German explosive hand grenade DM21

The hand grenade body consists of the upper and lower part. Both are made of asphalt cardboard and have a cylindrical structure. In the cover of the upper part there is a thread for screwing in the igniter. After the explosive charge has been inserted, the two parts are firmly glued together. The explosive charge consists of a TNT pellet weighing around 200 g . A cover disk made of paper is glued to the thread to protect against moisture and foreign bodies. The detonators DM42 and DM42B1 used are replicas of the American detonator M 206 A 2 and have minor differences. Before the throw, the cover disc must be removed and the igniter screwed into the thread in the upper part.
