DSCH (motif)

The DSCH motif

DSCH is a musical motif that the Soviet Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich used in his music when he wanted to describe himself. It consists of the notes D - Es - C - H, which together result in DSCH. It stands for his initials (Д. Ш.) in German spelling (D. Sch.).

The motif appears in many of his works, for example in the 10th Symphony in E minor, the String Quartet No. 8 in C minor , the 1st Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in A minor, the 1st Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in E flat major, the 15th Symphony in A major and Sonata No. 2 in B minor for piano.

The international journal on Shostakovich studies also bears the name "DSCH".

The Scottish composer Ronald Stevenson wrote a 75-minute “Passacaglia on DSCH” for piano solo in 1960–62.
