history

Detroit Edison was founded in 1903 and took over the Edison Illuminating Company and the Peninsular Electric Light Company, which previously shared an electricity duopoly for the city of Detroit. In 1954, construction began on the St. Clair coal-fired power station, which was one of the largest thermal power stations in the world when the last power station block was completed. Two years later, construction of the first reactor block at the Enrico Fermi nuclear power plant began. In 1966 there was a partial core meltdown in the Fermi 1 reactor. The reactor was repaired and operated until 1972. The Fermi 2 reactor has been on the grid since 1986.
