DVD + RW Alliance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The DVD + RW Alliance is an industry consortium which affordable alternatives to the then little expensive recordable DVD formats DVD-R and DVD-RW of the DVD Forum wanted to offer and therefore the alternative formats DVD + R and DVD + RW , developed and promoted. The two alternative formats DVD + R and DVD + RW are also known as plus formats.

meaning

In the meantime, prices have been adjusted, with the vast majority of manufacturers offering both DVD-R (W) and DVD + R (W) media at the same price. The two formats share the market for recordable DVDs without any clear favorite being recognized. For the consumer, the distinction between the minus and plus formats is mostly irrelevant, because modern DVD devices read both DVD versions and only very few devices can only write DVD-R (W). With regard to the licensing costs for manufacturers to use the various DVD standards, the alternative formats resulted in more appropriate licensing conditions.

In contrast to the DVD Forum , the DVD + RW Alliance is not developing its own DVD successor, so this organization will drastically lose importance in the next few years.
