The DWK D 55 is a series of two-axle chain-driven diesel locomotives from the Deutsche Werke Kiel (DWK). It is the smallest locomotive in the first type program. 17 locomotives with different gauges and dimensions were built between 1933 and 1937:

  • 1435 mm: three pieces
  • 1000 mm: five pieces
  • 900 mm: two pieces
  • 750 mm: two pieces
  • 600 mm: five pieces

construction

The locomotives were powered by a three- or four-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from DWK with 40 kW ( 55 hp). They had a mechanical transmission with three or four gears. Both axles were driven by chains.

Whereabouts

Only one machine remained on the Borkumer Kleinbahn .

The Marine-Artillerie-Zeugamt Borkum received a locomotive of this type in 1935 (factory number 551) and 1936 (factory number 588). Both locomotives came to the Borkumer Kleinbahn after the Second World War. The first was used as LEER since 1948 as a replacement for the steam locomotive of the same name with its nameplate. The second locomotive was sold to a dealer in Hamburg in 1949. In 1952, it was switched to standard gauge and used in Stade.

Usually the LEER locomotive was responsible for delivering freight wagons. Their operations have gradually declined, mainly because freight transport shifted to the road in the late 1960s. Until the 1980s, it occasionally pulled regular passenger trains for a long time. By September 2016 it was officially operational and a reserve for the use of the historic cars. The machine was last used under its own power on the feast day of the 125th anniversary in summer 2013, for a special trip at the turn of the year 2014/2015 and then in August and then in September 2016. The locomotive has not been operational since then due to severe damage. The locomotive is a listed building.
