Daayiee Abdullah (* 1954 in Detroit , Michigan ), Sidney Thompson , is an American imam .

Life

Abdullah grew up in Detroit in the 1960s. He converted to Islam from the Southern Baptists when he was 29 . Abdullah heads the Islamic organization “Muslims for Progressive Values” (MPV) in the United States, which was founded in 2006. In this Islamic organization men and women have the same rights, they pray together, women are also allowed to lead the prayer. Gays and lesbians are welcome, they can also marry with imams like Daayiee Abdullah. Abdullah lives openly gay in Washington, DC In America, he became known in the media as the first openly gay imam.
