A dabqaad

The Dabqaad ( Somali for "fire bearer"), also known as the Girgire , is a clay vessel with one or two handles that is common in Somalia and southern Djibouti . It is used to scent the house by burning incense ( lubaan ) or special "fragrance stones" ( uunsi ) on hot coal .

The dabqaad can be found in almost every Somali household and is usually lit after a large meal and on special occasions, such as when visitors are expected. The vessel is made of white clay from areas in northern and southern Somalia; elsewhere, especially in the El Buur district, the device is made from meerschaum . It is said that the best and most beautiful dabqaad are produced in the Galguduud region . Many Somalis who live in Europe or North America also have a dabqaad.

Mabkhara is used in a similar way in Arabia, North Africa and Turkey .
