Roof tile franking of the German ATM series IV

As roof tile franking (sometimes also piggyback or stair franking ), philatelists describe the franking of a mail item in which a large number of postage stamps are stuck overlapping one another on the item.

Roof tile postage occurs as an on-demand use

  • in high phases of inflation , when brands with low nominal values that are still available are used up to settle sharply increased fee rates;
  • after currency reforms, in which postage stamps of the old currency remain valid, but whose face value only corresponds to a partial face value of the new currency;

as well as philatelic use

  • with the introduction of new postage stamps for documentation, especially of smaller values in a series.

While the aforementioned reasons are mainly due to a problem with the available space, the following point should not be underestimated, especially with newer editions:

  • To the detriment of the transporting postal company, by sticking postage stamps that have already been canceled so that the original cancellation can no longer be recognized.

If only postage stamps of the same drawing and value class are used for a roof tile franking , it is a special form of multiple franking , with different stamps a variant of mixed or colored franking .
