Dag Hammarskjöld Medal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dag Hammarskjöld Medal , along with the Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal and the UN Medal , is one of three awards given by the United Nations to people who have participated in international humanitarian, military or police missions . It was donated in December 2000 and is named after the former UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld , who was killed in an unexplained plane crash as part of a mediation mission .

The Dag Hammarskjöld Medal is not to be confused with the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal of Honor , founded in 1977 , which is awarded for “outstanding services in promoting the solution of world problems through the United Nations system”.

Award requirements

Independent of the UN medal , the medal is awarded posthumously to people who have lost their lives while participating in a UN mission.

design

The medal consists of a clear, colorless lead glass crystal, which rests on a black velvet cushion fastened with a blue ribbon.
