The Daikannon statue (仙台 大 観 音) in the north of Sendai ( Japan ) was the second tallest statue in the world after the Mother Home Statue in Kiev when it was completed on September 1, 1991 . But this Japanese record only lasted until the Ushiku Daibutsu statue was completed in 1993 . In 2018, with a height of 100 m (including the base of 8 m), it is still one of the tallest statues in the world .

description

The statue represents the Bodhisattva Kannon from Shingon Buddhism . The white female figure holds a ball with a diameter of 3 m in her right hand , which is supposed to represent the Nyoihōju (如意 宝珠), a gemstone that fulfills the wishes of its owner. In the left hand the figure holds a bottle (length 8 m and diameter 2 m), which is said to contain the water of wisdom.

The visitor reaches the entrance of the Daikannon statue via one of the two side stairs at the foot of the statue. The entrance is designed in the shape of an open dragon's mouth. On the ground floor there are 33 sculptures along the outer wall, which represent the 33 shapes of the Kannon. On the inner wall are demonic creatures in armor, each representing a month from Chinese astrology .

Inside the statue there is an elevator with which the visitor can reach the twelfth level at a height of 68 m (shoulder area of the statue). Through several windows there is a view in different directions, over the nearby golf course and the city of Sendai, and on a clear day as far as the Pacific. Aviation lights are located on both shoulders of the statue .

There are a total of 108 Buddha statues on levels three to eleven of the statue. Each statue represents an earthly desire that people have.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the city development of Sendai, the total length of the Kannon statue is set at 100 m. The basement was set at 21 m in the 21st century in the hope of prosperity.
