Ushiku Daibutsu

The Ushiku Daibutsu ( Japanese 牛 久 大 仏 ; " Great Buddha of Ushiku"), a representation of the Buddha Amitabha , is one of the tallest statues in the world with a height of around 100 m . The statue, completed in 1995, is located in Ushiku , around 50 km northeast of Tokyo , in the Japanese prefecture of Ibaraki .

The Ushiku Daibutsu stands in the middle of a park that is now called Ushiku Arcadia . Originally known as Jodo Teien , the place serves to reflect on the path of the Bodhisattva Dharmakara ( Hozo Bosatsu ), who, according to tradition, attained enlightenment after a long period of practice and became Buddha Amitabha.

Amitabha's hands are shown in the Vitarka mudra . The right is raised, the left is lowered, both palms point towards the viewer, with the thumb and forefinger touching at the tips and the other three fingers each stretched out. It is the gesture of the presentation of the teaching (cf. Dharma ) and symbolizes how Amitabha leads his listeners through conviction on the path to enlightenment.

The outer shell of the statue consists of more than 6000 bronze plates with a thickness of 6 mm. The base is formed by a lotus-shaped plinth and a platform, each around 10 m high, making the total height 120 m.

Visitors can use an elevator to get to a viewing platform at a height of 85 m.
