Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) is the largest dairy processing and marketing company in the United States and one of the five largest in the world .

The company, which is headquartered in Kansas City , Missouri , is now owned by seven regional cooperatives . The merger of initially four cooperatives in 1998 was later joined by others, including Oakhurst Dairy in 2014 . Several dairy companies have also been taken over over the years.

Key figures

The more than 14,000 members of the cooperatives involved keep around 1.8 million cows on 9,000 farms. The DFA farms themselves produce around 20 billion liters of milk a year, and DFA markets a total of 30 billion liters. This corresponds to about 30% of the total milk production in the United States.

In addition to milk, the company also produces milk powder, ingredients for use in the food industry, butter, cheese, ice cream and other dairy products, which are sold under various proprietary and commercial brands.

In 2015, DFA achieved milk-related sales of US $ 13.8 billion (equivalent to EUR 12.4 billion) with around 5,000 employees and around 40 production sites.
