The Dalhousie Gazette (short: The Gazette ) is the student newspaper of Dalhousie University in Halifax ( Canada ). It has been published since 1868, making it the oldest permanent student newspaper in North America .

It is the second largest newspaper in Halifax with a weekly circulation of 10,000. It is published and funded by the Dalhousie Gazette Publishing Society . In addition to the editors, members of this association are the authors and the members of the Dalhousie Gazette Publishing Board . To finance this, the newspaper charges a monthly fee of around US $ 5 per academic year .

The main task of the Gazette is the independent reporting on financial, social and administrative bodies of the student union, the student associations and the university itself. It also reports on events of the students and alumni . A weekly anonymous article is published in the Gazette dealing with controversial political issues. Together with the Studentenwerk, the newspaper has repeatedly called for reforms to the financing of higher education in Canada since the mid-1990s. This is a topic that affects Dalhousie University students as they pay the highest tuition fees in the country.

Because of its high circulation, the newspaper repeatedly deals with non-university events. In the last few years, everything from international and regional politics to reports on performances by local artists has been covered.

The student engagement for the newspaper is extraordinarily high. In addition to financial support, many students work as authors or photographers.

An issue of the Gazette has 20 to 28 pages, with around 1,000 to 2,000 words per page. In 2006 the newspaper employed twelve paid publishers, one office worker and one graphic designer.
