Dallas Fuel is an American professional Overwatch Esports team based in Dallas , Texas . Fuel competes in the Overwatch League (OWL) as a member club of the League Pacific Division. Fuel is one of twelve founding members of the OWL and was the second franchise whose brands were officially revealed by Activision Blizzard .
Branding
On October 5th, 2017, the Dallas Fuel brand was officially unveiled. The creation grew out of the OWL requirement for participating franchises to create new geolocated brands as well as business units that are specific to the league.
Surname
Since the franchise is based in Dallas, Texas, creating an authentic name for the city of Dallas and its surrounding areas, as well as one that would "appeal to a wide variety of esports fans, traditional sports fans, and game fans" was paramount during the naming process. New investment partner, the Hersh Interactive Group, led by Dallas-based Kenneth Hersh, also wanted a name that was closely tied to its Texan roots and linked to Hersh's rich legacy in the energy industry. With the above criteria, the name Dallas Fuel was finally chosen.
Hastr0, owner and native Texan, later stated that Dallas culture and economy are so closely tied to the energy sector that the name has given fans "something they can call Dallas authentically" a fact.
logo
The logo for the Dallas Fuel features an iconic blue flame set against a bold font announcing the team name. The flame in the logo was chosen to symbolize "the galvanizing spark that the franchise was supposed to kindle on esports fans in Dallas" and the industry as a whole. Randy Chappel, executive director of Hersh Interactive Group, stated that "the logo and identity of the Dallas Fuel franchise recognize the legacy and strength of the Texas energy sector and the business history of Ken Hersh."
Colours
The official team colors are blue, gray and black. Blue serves as the primary team color, honoring the tradition of parent esports organization Team Envy, commonly known as Boys in Blue, and in recognition of the time they played before joining the OWL.
Uniforms
The fuel jerseys are white for away games and blue for home games. The uniforms have the Jack-in-the-Box logo, the first OWL shirt sponsor, which is prominently placed on the front.
Property and finance
On August 6, 2017, it was first reported that Team Envy , with investments outside the company, was on the verge of acquiring the Austin-Dallas OWL franchise spot for $ 20 million. Soon after the investor was revealed as the Hersh Interactive Group run by Kenneth Hersh. On September 18, Team Envy owner Michaelangelo "Hastr0" Rufail confirmed that they had secured a multimillion dollar investment from HIG, with HIG serving as the organization's strategic partner, while Hastr0 would remain as the team's main owner and operator. On September 20, Blizzard officially announced that the Dallas franchise, now known as the Dallas Fuel, had been picked up by Team Envy.
In November 2017, Team Envy signed a multi-million dollar deal with the Jack in the Box restaurant chain . As part of the deal, Jack in the Box became the official fast-food restaurant and exclusive jersey partner of Fuels, and its logo was available for purchase in official team clothing. The team partnership was the first of its kind in the OWL.
