The Dalton Old Parish Church is a ruined church in the Scottish village of Dalton in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 2000 the structure was protected as a Scheduled Monument . The surrounding cemetery has also been on the Scottish Monuments Lists since 1971 . After it was initially listed as a Category B building, it was upgraded to the highest monument category A in 1988.

description

The north side of the church, built in 1704, rests on the foundations of an older, presumably medieval church building. With the construction of Dalton Parish Church in the 1890s, the old church building became obsolete and is now only preserved as a ruin.

The building is located on the western edge of the village in the middle of the surrounding cemetery. The inner surface of the quarry stone structure with natural stone details is 16.6 m × 6.4 m. The elongated windows are rusticated and correspond to the corner stones . The side façades close with a simple, grooved cornice , which today is only preserved in fragments. Originally two entrance doors on the north side led into the interior. However, these were redesigned to windows. In addition to the doors added later on the east and west sides, further doors led directly to the gallery. The final gable roof has not been preserved. On the west gable sits a small roof turret with an open bell.

graveyard

A quarry stone wall and iron fences border the surrounding cemetery. The area was expanded around 1918. Two rusticated gateposts flank the main entrance. In the cemetery there are richly ornamented tombstones, some of which are sculptured, from the 18th to 20th centuries. A small morgue extends flush with the wall .
