Damaris (Bible)
Damaris ( ancient Greek ἡ δάμαρ "wife", "beloved", "wife" or "implored by the people") is a biblical figure who lived in Athens around the year 55 .
Life
Damaris was converted by the apostle Paul through his sermon on the Areopagus in Athens, as reported in Acts 17.34 EU . She is often referred to as the wife of Dionysius Areopagita , who is mentioned before her as one of Paul's listeners and a new believer. But possibly accompanied her as a courtesan one of the listeners.
Her feast day is celebrated in the Catholic Church on October 4th. In the Greek Orthodox Church she is venerated as a saint : ἡ Ἁγία Δάμαρις ἡ Ἁθηναία ("the holy Damaris of Athens"). Her feast day there is October 3rd. In Athens (Pankrati district) a central street is named after her (Οδός Δαμάρεως).
