The Ladies' Monastery ( Palác šlechtičen in Czech ) is a Baroque palace in the center of Brno and forms part of the Moravian State Museum .

history

The palace on Freedom Square (Náměstí Svobody) was built between 1682 and 1690 by the Brno builder Jan Křtitel Erna . The building was extended between 1790 and 1791 and connected to the Althanský palác located next to it.

In the women's monastery in the palace , orphaned girls from the aristocratic as well as from the bourgeoisie were educated.

During the Second World War , the Palais Althan was so badly damaged by American air raids in 1944 that it had to be demolished in 1948. Originally the women's pen was also supposed to be torn down.

In the course of the 1950s, however, the building was reconstructed according to plans by Bohuslav Fuchs and preserved for cultural purposes. The historical roots were preserved and a museum use was planned. The major renovations took place from 1957, so that in 1961 a permanent exhibition The People in Five Generations could be opened, which could be shown until 1999.

New renovations took place in the years 2000 to 2002, so that since then, changing exhibitions have been shown continuously.
