Damis (Aipytide)
Damis ( ancient Greek Δᾶμις ) was according to Pausanias in the year 724 BC. A Messenian general from the Aipytiden family .
After in 724 BC When the Messenian king Aristodemus killed himself at the grave of his daughter, Damis was elected commander of the Messenians. The Spartan King Theopompus , who was at war with Messenia, died at that time. His successor Zeuxidamos besieged the Messenians on the Ithome and took the fortified city after five months.
Some of the Messenians left the country and the descendants of the once murdered Messenian king Androkles were assigned the area in Hyameia by the Spartans . The Messenians became Spartan subjects. The Asineans expelled from the Argolida received the land around Rhion .
The historicity of the literarily embellished events is critically assessed in research and the dates given in Pausanias are considered incorrect and should be set around 40 years later.
