Dam culture

The mounds (also Dammsaat or dam cultivation ) is a cultivation method in agriculture and fruit production.

application

In particular, dam cultures are used when the soil has accumulated moisture . Corresponding plowing creates furrows and dams in the direction of the natural slope . You can then plant on the drier dams. In the case of potato , horseradish and asparagus crops, dam cultivation takes place independently of questions of water supply to facilitate harvesting.

equipment

Potato ridger

A motorized ridging plow has a symmetrical coulter on the plow body that penetrates the earth with its tip and a mouldboard that turns left and right. This creates furrows between which the thrown up earth forms dams, such as those required in potato and asparagus cultivation. The mouldboards of the ridging plows are partially adjustable to change the size of the dam. Other constructions have several pegs with chain rollers, which ensure sufficient consolidation of the dams and create fine soil for safe seed emergence. These plows are built for 4 dams or for 6 dams and can provide dam spacings of 90 to 45 cm. Modern devices are often designed as a ridge cutter . They ensure a largely clod-free earth dam even under rather dry conditions .
