The Dampier Strait [ ˈdæmpjə ] is a shipping route that connects the Bismarck Sea with the Solomon Sea . It runs between the islands of Umboi , the Knights Island and Sakar in the west and New Britain in the east.

The street was named after the British navigator William Dampier .
