Dancing barefoot

Dancing Barefoot is a rock song that was written by Patti Smith and Ivan Král and was released as the second single from the Patti Smith Group's album Wave in 1979. According to the album cover, the song was dedicated to women like Jeanne Hébuterne , Amedeo Modigliani's lover .

The album Wave was made at a time when Patti Smith met the guitarist of the band MC5 , Fred "Sonic" Smith. She obviously wrote the first song on the album, Frederick , for her future husband. Dancing Barefoot poetically describes their feelings and the secrets of mutual human attraction (“Here I go and I don't know why, I keep turning until I lose my sense of gravity…”).

In 2004 Rolling Stone magazine chose the song at number 323 of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

Cover versions

The song has been covered by many artists including The Feelies , The Mission , Pearl Jam and the Simple Minds . The pop group Shakespears Sister released a cover version on their album Cosmic Dancer in 2011 . In 1989 U2 recorded the song as the b-side of the single When Love Comes to Town . The song also appeared on the limited edition of the compilation The Best of 1980-1990 and on the soundtrack of the film Alone Zweisam Dreisam .
