Danelectro is an American manufacturer of musical instruments and accessories that specializes in electric guitars , electric basses , guitar amplifiers and effects devices .

The Danelectro company was founded in 1947 by Nathan Daniel. In the late 1940s, the company manufactured instrumentation amplifiers for mail order companies Sears and Montgomery Ward. In 1954 Danelectro began to build guitars and basses themselves. The guitars were their electromagnetic "lipstick tube" - pickups known: In order to keep the price as low as possible, Danelectro large stocks wore lipstick bought Sleeves from overproduction, in which the company einbaute their pickups. This is how the characteristic name and appearance of these pickups came about. The bodies of the guitars are hollow and, then as now, consisted of a wooden frame clad with masonite , a fiber board from which boats were also made.

In 1956 Danelectro was the first manufacturer to introduce a six-string electric bass, the model UB-2, which was copied by other companies such as Fender (model Fender VI ). However, this instrument could not establish itself on the market. In 1966 Danelectro was bought by the entertainment company MCA . One year later, on the initiative of MCA, the Coral product line was introduced , which consisted of semi-resonance guitars and electric sitars. In 1969 the factory was closed.

Since 1990 Danelectro has specialized in selling replicas of the Silvertone guitar and current guitar effects. After a temporary end, the Danelectro range now includes various guitar replicas of its own earlier models, some with unusual designs, as well as a wide range of different effects devices for electric guitars.

Mitanis Sound Distribution took over the distribution of Danelectro musical instruments in Germany in 2013 . One of the most famous studio musicians with a danelectro bass was Carol Kaye . Jimmy Page ( Led Zeppelin ) plays a model 3021 on the album Physical Graffiti (1975), among others .
