Daniel Kientzy

Daniel Kientzy (* 1951 in Périgueux ) is a French saxophonist .

Life

As a teenager, Kientzy played guitar in various dance and pop bands before attending René Decouais' saxophone class at the Limoges Conservatory . At the Conservatoire de Paris he received first prizes in the subjects of saxophone and chamber music. In addition, he also dealt with historical instruments such as the krummhorn , the viol and the bagpipe and founded the Ensemble Musica Ficta with which he performed music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the early Baroque. Later he studied acoustics, electroacoustics, recording technology and signal processing.

Since the late 1970s, Kientzy, who has mastered all the instruments in the saxophone family, has made a name for himself as an important interpreter of contemporary saxophone music. More than 400 compositions have been written for him and his discography includes over 70 albums.

With Reina Portuondo he forms the Meta Duo , which is dedicated to the connection of instrumental and electroacoustic music. He wrote the textbook saxology on saxophone playing .

Awards

In 1982 he received the SACEM Grand Prix , in 1992 he was Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres and the Union of Composers of Romania honored him in 1991 and 2007 for his interpretation of works by Romanian composers.
