Darayya , also Daraja ( Arabic داريا, DMG Dārayyā ), is a city in the Rif Dimashq governorate in Syria . It is a suburb of Damascus .

history

During the civil war in Syria , parts of the city turned against President Bashar al-Assad early on and joined the rebels. The city has been the scene of fierce fighting several times. There were reports in the media that between 200 and 320 people were executed by the Syrian Army in a massacre in August 2012 .

After several weeks of heavy bombing, the defense area had melted down so that it was no longer possible to grow food there. The fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and their groups Liwaa Shuhada Al-Islam and Ajnad Al-Sham surrendered on August 25, 2016 after a four-year siege by Syrian government troops without aid supplies . After the weapons had been surrendered, the fighters were assured safe passage .

During the time of siege, the city housed a secret library with over 15,000 books that had been recovered from the rubble of destroyed houses. The library was looted after being captured by government soldiers.
