Dart Island is an island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is the largest of several islands that lie in the western entrance to Fildes Strait .
Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations carried out surveys between 1934 and 1935 and named these and two neighboring islands to the north and south as 70 islets after their minimum height of 70 feet . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee rejected this designation in 1961. The island described here was named after the British sealer Dart , based in London , who operated around 1923 in the waters around the South Shetland Islands.
