Darwinian ear humps

The Darwin ear hump , Darwinian ear hump or Darwin's hump is a cartilage process on the outer edge of the auricle of humans. In a study in Spain, it was found in 56 of 539 subjects.

The ear hump named after Charles Darwin was interpreted by him as an evolutionary remnant of the previously pointed mammalian ear and is therefore regarded as an atavism or rudiment . Although named after Darwin, it was first described by the British sculptor Thomas Woolner .
