The secret of the black masks is a dramatization of Karl May's story Der Grenzmeister from Volume 43 of the Collected Works , in turn an adaptation of the Erzgebirge village history in the Sonnenthau .

The production was created in collaboration with the Stollberg Theater Education Center and the theater group “Thea (l) ternative”.

Content (of the village history)

Heiner returns to his hometown. There he notices that the "border master", as the head of a smugglers' gang, terrifies people because he once blinded the Thorbauer Schubert with gunpowder.

Heiner, who loves Schubert's daughter, discovers that his stepfather, Oppermann, is the “border master”. While he wants his son to become a smuggler, Heiner wants to dissuade his father from his actions. Oppermann then tries to plunge the confidant into a ravine.

In a valley, Schubert seeks sundew for relief for his injured eyes. At this place his memory of the attack returns and he can discover the hiding place of the "border master". This is provided with the help of the military. During the fight the "border master" Oppermann is blinded and falls into the gorge, which has already been the undoing of many of his victims.
