The West Room ( traditional characters :西廂記; abbreviation :西厢记; Pinyin : Xīxiāngjì) is one of the most famous spectacles of China.

The piece was written during the Yuan Dynasty by the writer Wang Shifu 王實甫 (approx. 1260–1336) and is set during the Tang Dynasty .

The subject of this popular Chinese love story is the love of the young exam candidate Zhang Junrui (張君瑞) and the daughter of a state minister, Cui Yingying (崔 鶯鶯).

Zhang Junrui and Cui Yingying fall in love, with the maid Hongniang playing an intermediary role. But their relationship seems to be doomed until they can finally get married.

The piece was translated into German by Vincenz Hundhausen : The West Room: A Chinese Singspiel from d. 13th Century. In German post-poetry after d. Chinese Original texts d. Wang She-Fu and Guan Han-Ching .
