The Green Heart of Austria is a well-known word and image mark from 1972 that is used in tourism advertising in the Austrian state of Styria .

History and use

The image of green Styria (also known as the “Green Mark”) is traditional. It refers to the fact that Styria is the most densely forested federal state in Austria (around 61 percent of the area). The forest as a cultural landscape - and thus indirectly also its color - has long played an important role in the minds of the population, which is reflected in the text versions of the Styrian national anthem and is also reflected in the country's green color, which is rarely found in European heraldry .

Based on this tradition, the Graz artist Helmut Gross (1942–2010) created the word and image mark in 1972 at the suggestion of the responsible regional councilor Franz Wegart , which was immediately used by Styria tourism advertising and soon became a well-known trademark developed. According to a survey from 2010, the logo and motto are known to 88 percent of all Austrians and achieved high scores in terms of memorability, recognition value and credibility. The word and image mark is also used outside of the tourism sector, for example by Styrian companies and at sporting events sponsored by the State of Styria.

Steirische Tourismus GmbH is the owner of the word / figurative mark “Styria The Green Heart of Austria” registered with the EU Trademark Office (EUIPO).
