Data Transformation Services

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Data Transformation Services , or DTS , is a collection of packages, components and auxiliary programs that allow extract, transform, load processes to be automated when importing into or exporting from a database. DTS are integrated into Microsoft SQL Server and are mostly used with it. Independent use with other databases is also possible.

DTS enables data from heterogeneous sources such as OLE DB , ODBC or text files to be loaded and transformed into any supported database . In addition, these steps can be carried out regularly using a schedule. It is also possible to send files via FTP and to call up external programs. In conjunction with a version control system such as Microsoft Visual SourceSafe , DTS can also serve as an alternative for backing up packages.

Starting with Microsoft SQL Server 2005, DTS has been replaced by SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
