history

Emergence

First of all, the Apostolic Datarie was formed in the High Middle Ages as a department of the Apostolic Chancellery with the task of dating papal decrees and documents. After the two offices were separated, the data center was responsible for accepting and examining petitions and granting grace. As an autonomous office it is the first time during the pontificate of Pope Martin V. mentioned. The Datarie was headed by a Curial prelate who bore the title Datar and was elected from among the members of the Apostolic Chancellery.

Structural reform in the 16th century

The Apostolic Datarie was restructured by Pope Sixtus V and received additional competencies. It was now responsible for the granting of benefits , insofar as these did not fall within the competence of the consistory or insofar as there was no legal entitlement to them. The datarie issued the dispensations that did not fall within the remit of the Apostolic Penitentiary . In addition, she could grant pensions and impose conditions on the benefit and other church goods.

17th century

Since the 17th century , the head of the Apostolic Datarie was usually a cardinal who carried the title Pro-Datar in this capacity . This fact shows the importance that this curia authority had already attained at this time and is underlined by the common designation of the date as oculus papae ("eye of the pope") and the introduction of the office of sub-datar . This represented the Pro-Datar in its absence and supported it in managing the authority. There were also a large number of other officials.

The Dataria apostolica was founded in 1967 by Pope Paul VI. abolished with the Apostolic Constitution Regimini ecclesiae universae .
