Data retention

Data retention , ( English data remanence ) means that data on storage media or electronic components are retained in various strength and can be restored under certain circumstances after an erase operation.

Magnetic remanence B R is used to store the data on magnetic storage media (e.g. hard disk , magnetic tape , floppy disk ) : the data remains on the hard disk even after the write head has been removed, as the particles retain their magnetic orientation. This remanence, which is sometimes referred to as data remanence in the data sheets of manufacturers / distributors, is around 160 mT for music cassettes  and 500 mT for tapes for video cameras.

However, data retention also refers to the retention of data on the medium after it could have been deleted by unintentional (e.g. heat, external magnetic field) or intentional (deletion of files) processes. The term is not limited to magnetic storage media, but also generally to electronic components in which configuration data is to be retained even when the power supply is switched off.

Data retention is often undesirable when the issue is that data should actually be deleted but remain on the storage medium.
