Datil is a census-designated place (CDP) in the US state of New Mexico in Catron County , which has about 620 inhabitants. The site is on the edge of the Cibola National Forest at the intersection of US Highway 60 and New Mexico State Route 12 . Datil was founded in 1884 when a shop with a post office opened at this intersection for the surrounding farms.

A chilli cultivar called "Datil", which is a small, pointed variety of the genus Capsicum chinense , has also become well known. It is grown exclusively in the Datil area and is widely used in commercially produced chili hot sauces.
