Daunt rock

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daunt Rock (formerly Daunt's Rock ) is an underwater rock in the Celtic Sea not far from the coast of County Cork , Munster Province , Ireland . It is located approximately 5 nautical miles south-southwest of Roches Point and the entrance to Cork Harbor . The rock reaches almost to the surface of the water and is a dangerous obstacle to shipping.

It was only after the American steamship City of New York (2360 GRT) crashed on the rock in thick fog on March 29, 1864 and finally sank there on April 7, that it first became a bell boat and then from 1874 and until 1974 a lightship positioned in the immediate vicinity, including the Puffin from 1887 to 1896, the Gannet until 1928, the Comet until 1965 and most recently the Osprey until 1974.
