David Coleman (born 1946 ) is Professor Emeritus of Population Science  at Oxford University , author and former Fellow of St John's College, Oxford .

After working as a lecturer at Oxford University from 1980, he was there from 1996 to 2002 reader of demography. in 2002 he was appointed professor there. From 1985 to 1987 he served as Special Adviser to the Home Office and later as Advisor to the Department of Housing and Environment for the UK Government. Coleman is a consultant to MigrationWatch UK and a member of the Galton Institute (formerly the Eugenics Society ). He has also served as an advisor to the United Nations . At times he was co-editor of the European Journal of Population . He retired in 2013.

In 2007 he was criticized by students at Oxford University who denounced his statements as eugenic . Coleman said the hostility was based on his association with Migrationwatch, his membership in the Galton Institute, and statements in academic publications and in the media criticizing the alleged benefits of large-scale immigration . In 2013, he stated that white Britons would become a minority by 2070 if current demographic trends continue. Two years later he wrote together with Stuart Basten that trends in birth rates in Europe had been misunderstood and that the change in the age structure would cause difficulties, but these could be overcome.

His research focuses on the development of fertility rates in industrialized nations, the demographic development of ethnic minorities , housing policy and the demographic consequences of immigration.

Coleman has published several books and numerous scientific articles.

In 2016 he was awarded the Olivia Schieffelin Nordberg Award (The Population Council).
