David Day
David Day (born October 14, 1947 in Victoria , Vancouver Island ) is a Canadian author who is best known for his non-fiction books about the life and work of JRR Tolkien .
Live and act
After finishing school in Victoria , British Columbia , Day worked as a lumberjack on Vancouver Island for five years . He then traveled to Europe, especially Greece , where he wrote his first volume of poetry entitled The Cowichan . He also lived in London for some time.
Day's main focus is on the life and literary work of Tolkien. His books on the subject include Tolkien Bestiary (1978), The Tolkien Companion (1993), Tolkien's Ring (1994), The Hobbit Companion (2000), Tolkien: The Illustrated Encyclopedia (2000), and Tolkien's World (2002).
Day also wrote children's and non-fiction books on ecology and extinct and endangered animals. In his book The Doomsday of Animals (1981) he describes extinct vertebrates and plants, some of which were illustrated for the first time. In 1995/1996 the book became the basis of the television series Lost Animals (German: Animals that once existed , 1999). In about five hundred minute episodes animals as were Berber lion , the Caribbean monk seal , the Carolina Parakeet or balitiger introduced that became extinct during the 20th century. 1984 appeared with Castles the first of five books, which was illustrated by Oscar winner Alan Lee (set designer of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy). His book Eco Wars (1989) portrays environmental and animal protection activists like Dian Fossey and Chico Mendes who were murdered because of their convictions. The book The Whale War (1987) formed the basis for an ITV television documentary of the same name from 1993.
