David Harrington Angus Douglas, 12th Marquess of Queensberry FRCA FCSD (born December 19, 1929 in London ) is a Scottish peer and non-party politician from the Scottish clan Douglas .

life and career

Douglas was born on December 19, 1929, the only son of Francis Douglas, 11th Marquess of Queensberry from his marriage to the artist Cathleen Sabine Mann .

He attended Eton College and served in the Royal Horse Guards . In the 1950s he worked in the ceramic industry. Douglas was Professor of Ceramics at the Royal College of Art from 1959 to 1983 .

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Crafts Council , was President of the Design and Industries Association from 1976 to 1978, is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers and holder of its highest honor, the Minerva Medal . He has been a Senior Fellow at the Royal College of Art since 1990 .

He is a partner in the Queensberry Hunt design group , director of Highland Stoneware and a member of the trustee of the Paolozzi Foundation .

Douglas is currently not a member of the Hereditary Peerage Association .

Membership in the House of Lords

Douglas inherited the title of 12th Marquess of Queensberry when his father died in 1954 . From the entry into force of the Peerage Act 1963 , this also included a seat in the House of Lords . He made his inaugural address on May 24, 1965 on the Sexual Offences Bill . For this he spoke up twice more. He sat there as a non-party ( Crossbencher ).

In the session from 1997 to 1998 he was given a leave of absence . He lost his seat through the House of Lords Act 1999 . For one of the remaining seats for hereditary peers , he had not positioned himself. He is not on the Register of Hereditary Peers .

family

Douglas was married three times, first from 1956 to Anne Jones. They have two daughters together, Emma (* 1956) and Alice (* 1965). The marriage ended in divorce in 1969. In the same year he married Alexandra Mary Clare Wyndham Sich, with whom he had three sons, Sholto (* 1967), Milo (1975-2009) and Torquil (* 1978), and a daughter, Kate (* 1969).

In 2000 he married Hsueh-Chun Liao, with whom he had a daughter, Beth (1999-2018).

He has an eldest but illegitimate son, Ambrose Jonathan Carey (* 1961), head of a British security company, his half-sister Caroline Carey (* 1959), an English art student, married to Salem bin Laden , the former head of the global Bin Laden family company . Carey has been married to Christina Weit, a daughter of the late Sir Michael Weir (1925-2006) and his first wife, Alison Walker , since 1995 . They had two sons: Angus Carey-Douglas and James Carey-Douglas. Since Ambrose was born out of wedlock, he and his two sons have no inheritance claims to the titles of their father or grandfather.

When his heir apparent ( Heir apparent ), his eldest son from his second marriage, Sholto Douglas, Viscount Drumlanrig applies (* 1967), although this was born yet during the first marriage.

Honors

He was honored with an honorary doctorate from Staffordshire University .
